Austin gets both large hail and damaging straight-line wind. On the afternoon of April 9, 2024, NWS storm reports included pictures of hail up to tennis ball size near MoPac and Far West Blvd in Northwest Austin, egg-size hail in the Allandale neighborhood, and golf ball-size hail at the KVUE studios in North Austin.
On May 28, 2025, storms brought a 77 mph gust measured at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and a 65 mph gust measured at the University of Texas. NWS reports from that evening describe numerous downed and snapped trees in East Austin with damage to the siding and windows of homes, and uprooted trees in the Hyde Park and Rosedale neighborhoods.

The City of Austin's list of work exempt from building permits includes asphalt shingles that replace existing asphalt shingles, and replacement of any roof covering that does not adversely affect the roof structure. Both exemptions end if the property is in the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) area and 50% or more of the roofing is being replaced. Roof decking work over 128 square feet is not on the exempt list.
The WUI matters here. The city's WUI Code page says more than half of Austin falls into Zones A, B or C, and every zone requires a Class A roof assembly. Even when no permit is needed, the work must still follow the WUI Code. The code applies inside Austin's full and limited purpose areas, not to properties fully in the ETJ. You can look up your address on the city's 2024 WUI Code Interactive Map.
If you have an HOA, check its rules before you change roof material or color. Under Texas Property Code Section 202.011, an HOA generally can't prohibit wind- and hail-resistant shingles that resemble and match what the subdivision allows.
